Kosher - What is it all about?

Kashrut is the name of the Jewish Dietary Laws. The "Kashrut" laws are a set of rules that specify which types of food and beverages are allowed to be consumed by Jewish people. The most commonly known law of "Kashrut" is the restriction on eating pork meat.

Kosher Meat

The first mentioning of Kosher food and the Kashrut laws is brought up in the book of Leviticus. It is stated, that the Jews may eat all beasts that have cloven hooves (such as cows and sheep) and chew their cud. For example, pigs do have cloven hooves but do not chew their cud. It is restricted by the Jewish law to eat the flesh of these non kosher animals.

Kosher Seafood

The bible also specifies rules regarding seafood. It is stated that all animals that live in the water, seas, rivers and have fins and scales may be eaten by Jewish people. For example, sea animals that are not kosher are - sharks, catfish and all shellfish.

Animals that are permitted to be consumed by Jews still need to be killed, in accordance with the Jewish laws. Another important Jewish Kashrut law is the restriction to mix meat and dairy products. It is customary that a period of about 4 hours must pass after the consumption of meat, before dairy products can be eaten.

Why Do the Kosher Laws Exist

According to the Jewish philosophy, there are several views for the purpose of the Kashrut laws. One of the most commonly accepted reason is, that these laws were created and still exist in order to protect the health of God's "chosen people". It is important to consider that these laws were created in the times when there was still no concept of hygiene.

Another view is that these laws were considered to differentiate the Jews from the other nations living with them. Some claim that the laws of Kashrut also supply a sense of self discipline and self control, by refraining from pleasures and delights.
